SPOOLS

Our silk ribbon (with the exception of ribbon samples) comes wound on a signature Violette spool. Hand crafted in studio from Tasmanian Oak and Mother of Pearl (otherwise known as nacre), our spools have been beautifully designed to be kept and treasured. Mother of Pearl is a naturally formed material produced by molluscs, therefore each spool is unique, featuring organic textures and patterns in iridescent shades of white, champagne and grey, some mottled with flecks of brown.

FAQs

  • There are a few things to take into consideration when calculating how much ribbon you will need for invitations and stationery items. How big is the card/envelope and will there be multiple layers? How many times will you wrap the ribbon around? Will you tie the ribbon in a bow, knot or secure it with a wax seal?

We recommend taking a piece of string and tying it around your invitation in your preferred style so that you can get a rough idea of how much ribbon you will need for each one. Simply measure the string and multiply it by the number of lengths you need – this will give you the total length of ribbon required. (Just remember that your cut lengths may not perfectly divide into the spool length, resulting in off-cuts. We suggest ordering a little extra just in case!)

  • How much ribbon you will need to adorn your bridal/bridesmaid bouquets or floral arrangements all depends on the look and feel you’re going for. Are you after long romantic tails that will flutter in the wind? A sweet little bow? Layers of silk in different colours and textures? There are so many ways to create a stunning look, perfect for you.

As a general rule, a 1.5m ribbon will create a dainty bow and tails. For extra long trailing ribbons we suggest 3m.

  • Violette silk ribbons are painstakingly torn by hand, one-by-one, resulting in softly frayed edges which are perfectly romantic and oh so pretty. You can expect some slight shedding with use. Simply remove any fly away threads by gently pulling them away from the edge of the ribbon, taking care to prevent any tangles.

  • Violette silks are hand dyed in small batches using botanical ingredients and traditional techniques. Our collection of beautiful colours and prints is sustainably created with flowers, leaves, roots, bark and berries – without the use of synthetic dyes. Part of the unique nature of botanical dying is that colours may subtly shift over time. We encourage you to embrace this evolution as nature takes it’s course. It is, after all, what makes them so magical! It also means a little extra love and care is needed when looking after your Violette silks.
